Failure as a Result of Illiteracy

Does your child play video games instead of reading books? You are not alone!

We’re living in a time where books are being replaced by TV, video games and social media. Reading is on the decline, and the stats tell us that only a small percentage of kids (approximately 1 in 4) read in their spare time. It’s the lowest on record and it’s only getting worse! The problem is, without reading, a child’s brain doesn’t develop properly. Kids prefer to watch or play video games, which can lead to:

Anti-social life of drugs and crime

Poor grades

Video games make children addicted that they can’t turn away from the screen. Kids lose the desire to study in school and do other activities. This negatively affects the child’s academic performance. As a result, the child begins to lag behind his peers and receive poor grades.

Video games negatively affects the child’s academic performance.

Behavioral problems

Video games cause so much stress and make children mean, irritating, violent. They started running around the house, screaming, shouting, terrorizing the pet, scribbling on the walls, and causing much harm to others.

Half the population cannot read a book written at 8th grade level.

It means that your child has a 50/50 chance of being on the wrong side of the statistics. The parents’ obligation is to make sure that this never happens to their children.

    I’m Elena…

I’m Elena and it was always my dream to be an English teacher. My mother was a writer, and for as long as I can remember, language and literature have always been a part of my life.

I got my degree in English and as well as teaching, I’m also an author with dozens of published books to my name.

Away from work, I have 3 children of my own and naturally they mean the world to me.

So, it was alarming to see the huge number of children that were falling behind in class…

And as I mentioned earlier, I wasn’t fully aware as to the extent of the problem at first, but afraid for my children’s future, I began to investigate

Instead of declaring war with gaming and technology, I decided I would work with them

    How This Came to Be

As a writer, my mom was creating stories of my favorite characters and was encouraging me to read. And it worked… I was reading all my spare time. I loved it, I enjoyed it so much that I wanted more.

It’s a simple recipe, it sounds easy… but it’s a little trickier when you try to put it into practice — why?

Well, more often than not, you don’t choose something your children are really passionate about. If the book you gave kids doesn’t excite them enough, they’re gonna lose interest. Also, when starting out, you really need to begin with shorter stories. If your child isn’t used to reading, longer stories will also cause them to lose their interest really fast!

When I looked around at school, I saw my students were into Roblox, which is the kids video game. So I learned as much as I could about it, and then I started writing a few stories to share with them in class. I read the first couple and they loved them, then they asked me to create more, so I did.

They were quite a rowdy bunch, and they made a lot of noise. But not long after I started to give them these short stories, their attitudes began to change for the better. Their performance increased, their behavior improved, and they were much calmer than before. Not long after this, they began reading other books too.

Then after a while, as their confidence grew and their passion for reading started to form, they felt comfortable enough to read more books. That was all the proof I needed, so I began to write Roblox books full-time and published them on Amazon. And the children loved them!

Since then, my book on Roblox has been #1 Amazon’s bestseller for many years
